I purchased the white Asus 1000HA from Amazon and love it. Purchased the extra 1g memory chip and it was very easy to install. I mean very easy for someone with no computer skills. I also got the external dvd drive and it was also a plug and play. keyboard is great. Much better and very usable versus the smaller Acer Keyboard. As for all the complaints about the stiff mouse buttons. They are fine, a little stiff but very livable. Very good qaulity, good feel, sturdy machine. Fast and incredibly portable. Fantastic screen quality. Crisp and bright. This machine is surprisingly useable and looks much more expensive then it is. It's downright cheap for what you get. Full size utility in a tiny package. Much better idea then having a cell phone with all the gimmicks that you can't even see without a magnifying glass. Seriously. This is a very sensible purchase. I love this thing. You won't be dissapointed. Comes with a perfect carry case that you can even fit the power supply and a few other things in like the external dvd drive. I keep this in my backpack at all times. Light weight and descent battery life. I can honestly say though that the battery life is on the shorter side rather then the advertised 7 hours. Longer then most other laptops I've had but definately do not think about leaving your power supply home because you won't get enough time out of the battery to get much done. The cord is easy to put in the case though so no need not to have it with you at all times. A great computer regardless of size. Lots of memory, speed, and storage. Rivals full size laptops. I use my 15 inch for home and keep this with me at all times. Also has a webcam built in. You can't go wrong. Enjoy. Best laptop I have ever used or owned.

The Size
Decades ago I carried a "luggable portable" the size of a suitcase through the airport. The size of computers has kept going down like Moore's law. For the past six years I have been using a 15 inch laptop as my main computer and for mobility. It was great but I always felt it was still a bit too big for true mobility or sitting on my lap. The Eee is the answer I have been waiting for. I wouldn't want it any smaller but it is big enough to use for hours.

Keyboard
I am not a speed typist and I don't think the keyboard would work well for speed typists. I have no complaints for my style of typing including the shift key location. At times I do wish the key labels were glow in the dark as it is hard to locate a key especially in dim light. I wonder if the white netbook would help this. The arrow keys are great, but I do wish the Home and End keys were separate as they are two keys I use quite often but these require pressing the Fn key first.

Touchpad
Of all the laptops that I have owned or used I find this to have the best touchpad. I like the size and the location and tactile of the buttons. I do turn off the tap to click due to my clumsy hands always pressing on it. But the buttons work great for me.

Screen
The native screen resolution is 1024x600 but there is a compressed mode that gives you 1024x768 which makes a difference for tasks like web surfing. But when I am reading a long email or web page I switch back to 1024x600 which is quick and easy to do.

Desktop
When I am at my desk I hook this up to my 22 inch monitor with USB mouse and full keyboard. I get full resolution of 1400x1050 and use it just like my desktop.

WiFi
The WiFi works just fine. No trouble configuring or accessing networks. I recently stayed at a hotel at the beach and it worked great, except when their router went down.

Battery
I haven't done a lot of power tweaking but I get about four hours of battery life which is ok most of the time.

External Drives
For DVDs and external hard drives I either access them through my network or use this great USB device that allows you to hook a drive up to one of the USB ports.

Overall this is a great little computer for such an incredible price. Maybe I should have waited for the HE to get the extra battery life but it hasn't ran down on me - although I haven't taken it camping yet.

I felt compelled to add my positive review to the chorus of others who have purchased this fantastic laptop. It loads within seconds, compared to my Dell desktop which takes 3 minutes, and connects to my wi-fi instantly no matter where I am in my home. I purchased a USB DVD/CD writer locally and had no problem loading my software. In fact the EEE had sufficient power to operated the CD writer without it's supplied power cord.

The hardware specs on this EeePC are decent for a laptop, and GREAT for the price. They're even better when the size of the product is taken into consideration. I've gotten countless compliments from jealous people over my unbelievably small laptop.

ASUS Support is particularly lacking though from my experience (not that you'll ever need to contact them). I had a problem with my laptop (that I caused due to my own error) and was looking for a backup copy of the original operating system sent to me. However, I never was able to get ahold of a representative when I called them several times over a few days. I bought the Samsung NC-10 for my wife and the Eee PC 1000HA for myself so I'll compare:

Summary: you can't go wrong with either one.

PROS: I like the fact that the Asus keyboard is tilted towards you, makes typing more comfortable. Also the power cord on the Asus has an elbow plug, which makes it more space-efficient and comfortable. I like that the screen hinge on the Asus is stiffer, the Samsung feels like it's going to fly open or slam shut. Touchpad is less sensitive than the Samsung (good thing), Samsung gets a lot of accidental dragging of items.

CONS: The Samsung has better style and a better battery. Also the keyboard is bigger and feels like it's better quality. Also the international warranty and more international name recognition is important for me. Obviously it wins for bluetooth also although you definitely pay for it. Less smudgy than the Asus.

Remember that the Asus mouse buttons are designed to be clicked in front, not on top.

I started out with an Asus 900a that ran linux. With virtually no hard drive and my need for a Windows product it proved to be a un-usefull toy.
From ther I went to the acer aspire unit with an 8.9 screen. Better, but it had video streaming problems and poor sound quality, as well as the keyboard size was difficult. When the hard drive crashed after 2 weeks I got my money back and bought this unit. Great sound, it's ergonomically not that much bigger than an 8.9, yet the keyboard is wonderful.Good video streaming and the battery, being a 6 cell offers 5.75 hours of usage. I enjoy the sd chip port and the bag that comes with it is o.k. but will not hold the cord or anything else so I replaced it with one to my liking. It is everyone in the houses favorite. My wifi printer downloaded perfectly. I am really amazed with the performance.
I am a big fan of the high CPU and graphic chip, I believe performance is everything. Without high end hardware, you simply cannot get your system running smoothly.
Well this small little notebook definitely change the way I see things.

this thing is really nice, its great with the camera to use skype, its not even that small, once your used to it you dont even realize it is all you need, i use it in class where it is convenient on a small desk and really light to carry around like a small book. The proccessor rocks too, comfortable to use standing or sitting and its really non abtrusive.

I bought this as a compact laptop to use at work, where I have very little counter space. It is a great size for me, and is very portable.

My only complaint after using it for a month is that the battery life is not quite what it's billed as being. I get a message telling me the battery is dangerously low after about 6 hours, so I now make a point of recharging it over lunch. (I've never let it run down completely, so maybe I'd get another hour or two out of it.)

Once the touchpad went beserk, and the arrow moved without any correlation to where my finger moved. I turned the computer off, turned it back on, and the touchpad worked fine again.

I think I read (literally) 1000's of reviews on multiple websites, including dozens of tech gadget site reviews before making this purchase. Ultimately I decided to go with this machine over the others out there based on the information I found.
I could not be happier with this machine. The keyboard IS small. But I've been using it for school for a month now and I've adapted to the slightly smaller scale quite quickly. (responding to other review comments I came across in my research)
I had no problems at all with the track pad & buttons on this machine. Everything is tight on this machine--including the usb ports--but I don't see that as a problem, myself.
The right shift button placement... yeah, it's still annoying but my fingers are getting used to that as well--it's just a slower process than the rest I guess.
I'm VERY glad I went with a 10 inch machine over an 8.9 inch. The little bit of extra screen space, for me, is priceless.
I have the 6 cell battery & I get, on average between 4 and 5 hours on a full charge. Would definitely recommend getting the 6 cell battery.
Overall, this machine is compact, *really* cute :), and solidly built. I made this purchase as I'm attending college 100% online and needed a reliable, quick machine that I could use to access my online classroom, take exams, research & write papers and of course--the basic social 'net stuff too... So far this machine has worked beautifully at whatever task I've asked of it. I'm on a typical student's shoe-string budget & spending a lot of $$ just wasn't an option. I looked at netbooks for the price as well as their compact size. I can carry this thing around with me SO easily. It's about the size and weight of a small text book. I could not be happier with my purchase. I've had the Asus PC 1000HA for about a week now and am very satisfied with it. The Keyboard fits my hands very well. The display is bright and vivid in color. I ordered the Pearl White model so it's easier to see the keyboard characters in dim light. Sort of an economical way of getting by without a back lit keyboard.

It is a great value considering you get :

1 gig of RAM
160 gig hard drive
10 inch screen
95% sized keyboard
1.3 mega pixel webcam
The familiar Windows XP OS
SD card, MMC slot
Skype preloaded
Padded carrying case
MS Works

Compare the specs to anything else in it's class. You get a good value for your dollar.

Keeping mind that a subnote book is not a laptop, so I think the 10" screen is the way to go over to 8 or 9" netbooks. It's still small but just about right for viewing much of web sites and blogs. You can always zoom into the text with a two finger mouse pad gesture.

As far as bloatware, there was none. No unwanted preloaded programs to delete. I went into "msconfig" >start up, and I had to turn of maybe one or two items. The Elantech mouse pad was a very pleasant surprize. It's very similar to the Macbooks gestures and makes it easy to accomplish the same tasks as left and right clicking the mouse buttons. I find the stiff mouse buttons not a major problem with me. I DO use a wireless mouse when practical and can turn off the mouse pad when doing so by right clicking the mouse Icon tray in the right side of the task bar.

However, the mouse pad gestures work better with IE than it does with Firefox.

The AC power supply is small and has a blue indicator light to show it`s plugged in. It's matching white too.

As far as the awkward Right Shift keys, I downloaded the freeware "Key Tweak" and swapped the Right shift key with the Up Arrow key, and the Down Arrow key with the Right Arrow key. The four keys in the lower right corner of the keyboard. Then physically popped the key off the keyboard and switched them around respectively. It was a bit scary prying on the keys of a new Netbook, hoping I wouldn't crack the plastic keys but it worked out OK. I YouTubed "Remove Keyboard Keys" to see how others have done it.

It boots up just as fast as my other laptops without the heat and with 3 times as long battery life. It runs cool.
I upgraded the RAM to 2 gig for about [...]. It was very easy. The easy access to the hard drive and RAM slot was one big selling point for me.

The included and often overlooked Microsoft Works Suite program also has a nice calendar scheduler program, a dictionary. Both of which you put shortcuts on the desktop. The word processor can save your documents to .DOC files. Microsoft Word documents. There is also a spreadsheet and database program as well. It has a Powerpoint player but not PowerPoint. Oh well. Of course, if you have MS Office that would work too. But, at least it does come with some sort of basic office type suite.

Bought the ASUS cause I did not want to go w laptop running VISTA and have to buy all new software. Like the size and the keyboard is easy to use. Installed the 2 GB card - no problem. Called for help on how to make it recognize the 2 GB card and got great response. ASUS is faster than my PC. Love taping the touchpad for clicks and the two finger scroll. I've had my Eee PC 1000Ha two months, I use it every day and it's behaved flawlessly. Fast, light, simple and rugged. Battery runs 6+ hours per charge, in that time it barely gets warm and is silent. Other reviewers complained that the keyboard flexes, mine does not. Others also dislike the high gloss finish showing fingerprints, but I don't notice. Still others thought the touchpad was "laggy" but I see no delay. Keyboard layout is funky but I'm getting used to it. Best of all, it's the last of the XP machines and thus boots and shuts down in a fraction of the time of a similar, bloatware, Vista machine. I will want to double the RAM to 2Gig before installing Office and other apps. but it's plenty fast for surfing via WiFi. It comes with a nice carry pouch that holds the power supply and cords too. It lacks a burner, but that's a small price to pay for its extreme portability. Built-in web cam is fun but it did not come with a utility to run it - I had to download that from Asus. The SD card reader is handy. The 10 inch screen is super bright and sharp, it's wide format and limited resolution choices are not a problem. In short, the Eee is the perfect computer and a bargain. I have nothing to say about it else than is the best laptop I ever had. With a basically clean Windows (almost no bloatware) except very useful things as the eee storage (online harddisk) and a power that I never imagine that this netbook was capable of. I don't know if the OS was tuned for this hardware, but it starts Windows faster than a PC with a core 2 duo 6800 and 2 gigs of RAM, and had is amazingly responsive. I ordered this little netbook with trepidations. I wasn't sure if I could use such a small laptop and was delighted to find that claims of the keyboard being 95% of a regulation sized one were true. I do find the size and placement of the shift key a bit annoying but once I got used to it - no problem. I am a touch typist and can type as fast and accurately on it as on my regular, heavy laptop. It is lightweight, fits easily on the tray on a plane so can work better while in flight, and has an amazing touchpad that has tapping options that allow for scrolling, clicking without using the stiff keys. Have discovered some other options by googling since they were not described in the instruction booklet. All in all, for the price and utility and weight, this is a wonderful addition to my computer collection and serves its purpose well. I've owned a normal size laptop and a PDA but neither traveled well being either too cumbersome or not useful. This PC is the right size with the right applications. The keyboard is small with it's infamous right shift key. Many times I don't press it well enough to get the shift. It's also a great second PC for web surfing away from my desk. The ASUS EeePC 1000HA is arguably the best mobility-for-your-dollar out there. If you're not concerned about high-end graphics, or gaming, and just need something that will speed through web surfing, MS Office, and basic programs, then this netbook is for you. In this review, I'll go over the major aspects of netbooks that people look for, and why this EeePC excels in all of them.

Hardware: Sporting the Intel Atom N270 processor, 1.6GHz at first glance may sound slow, but the EeePC takes advantage of all of it. It uses less power and has better efficiency than the Celeron, which is what the original models of the EeePC used to have, which means more battery life, lower temperatures, and better multitasking. This model comes with 1GB of DDR2 RAM installed, however I would definitely recommend upgrading to a 2GB stick, which is the maximum that the EeePC can handle. Most of the EeePC models come with a SSD, however it limits storage space. I chose this model with the 160GB HDD for two reasons. First, I need the extra storage space since I handle alot of data for both school and work. Second, I could always upgrade to a SSD in the future, when prices go down. The EeePC uses a standard Intel GMA graphics acceleration. This gives you the best picture possible, but do not expect it to perform if you want to play games on this laptop.

Comfort: One of the biggest concerns with netbooks is the keyboard size. The 1000HA has a almost-full size QWERTY keyboard, which is great for any size of fingers. The only problem I have with the key layout, just like others who have used this netbook, is the placement of the right shift key, which is awkwardly placed next to the Up arrow key. If you're paranoid about carpal tunnel, the battery on this EeePC is a little large, so it raises the netbook at an angle towards you, which is helpful for long periods of typing. The touchpad is very useful, and has multi-touch technology, just like what you see on Macbooks (except $1000 cheaper). This helps eliminate the need for a mouse by putting all the functionality in one place - pointing, scrolling, zooming, rotating - it can all be done on the same touchpad with finger gestures. Don't let the 10'' wide screen bother you because of it's small size. It's native resolution is 1024x600, and text is still easy to read. With the right tweaking, you can get the most out of your screen, which surprisingly, can fit a lot.

Features: The function keys on the EeePC are what you would normally see on any laptop. Brightness, output selection, volume, PgUp/PgDown, Sleep, WiFi, NumLK/ScrLK are all there. The EeePC also includes Super Hybrid Engine, which automatically decides how much performance to assign to your hardware, maximizing battery life as much as it can. The EeePC has a built in 1.3MP webcam, which is an added plus. Even though I don't use it that much now, it may come in handy later. ASUS boasts "Dolby" Surround sound on the 1000HA, but with the small speakers, it's hard to tell. With headphones on, it's definitely more noticeable. Another reason why I chose this model is because it comes with Windows XP, even though I'm not using it, it's always nice to have a license around just in case. Even though the chassis is plastic, it's still very sturdy, and feels like it can take moderate everyday stress. Also, the outer cover is glossy, which is nice for looks, but a finger-print magnet, if you're concerned about that (I'm not).

Mobility: Battery life is advertised "at up to 7 hours", but that's with the most minimal usage as possible. That would be sitting at the desktop, WiFi turned off, screen is turned off, CPU downclocked to save energy. A more realistic estimate would be 5 hours, because the average user would probably have 2 browser windows, 2 word documents, WiFi, and maybe music in the background running. Still, 5 hours still kicks butt. As a side note, I do want to mention that I'm using Windows 7 Beta on this, and the battery life is still, on average, 5 hours. There are tricks to save your battery, such as just turning off the screen when idle, or turning off your WiFi when you're not using it. The EeePC weighs about 1.5 kg, which is awesome because toting around a laptop that doesn't weigh you down is a big plus.

Overall, this netbook is simply amazing. I rated it 5/5 because it's just what I wanted in a netbook - Super mobility, Speedy Multitasking, and it's easy to use. Also, ASUS's customer support is great. As a system builder, I've been using their motherboards for years now, and they've always helped me out when I hit a roadblock. Also, if you're already familiar with Windows XP, there's no learning curve, so anyone can easily pick it up. If you're looking for the best all-around value for a netbook, the ASUS EeePC 1000HA is your best match.

Hi there Ive had this net book for a month now and I could not find any issues with it. I use it every day extensively at home and at college. The keyboard was a big issue for me but after a minute of typing it became second nature and I feel I cant type faster than on a regular keyboard. I upgraded it with a 2GB Crucial memory that works amazing and i honestly am wondering why everyone says you cant do much with these net books. I usually have the net with multiple tabs open, open office, google desktop, and probably another internet window for games and such. It runs without any lag! ya thats right all that stuff and no lag whatsoever!!! Battery life with me is around 5 hours but do dim it to around half when off cord. I've never had to take the cord with me anywhere its that nice. The wifi card picks up right away and gives high speeds and... and... well I've run outta breathe but fact is this net book is amazing.

I had been doing my research ever since I learned about the ASUS 701 but I waited and waited and after CES 09 came and passed with no real leaps I went with this guy. Iw almost went with the Samsung NC10 but after deliberation came to the following conclusion. ASUS is like the Apple of net books. All the accessories are there for them and they have a ton of knowledge sites and fan sites online.

Now as I write this I see the ASUS 1000he for around the same price and I would recommend that one over this one mainly for the wireless n but besides that theres not much difference.

I bought this as a gift for my niece and like the previous Netbook I had had occasion to use, I am impressed with its performance. We can use VOIP and run Skype and a couple of applications without a glitch.

At home, hook it up to a monitor and a regular sized keyboard and it behaves like a regular lowend computer. On its own it is incredibly light (a great asset when working with the 'puter on your lap) even if a bit smaller than a regular laptop.

To work around the lack of a CD/DVD drive, I made one of the drives on the networked desktop "shared." Now, the Asus can access the CDs / DVDs in that drive.

Makes me wonder if Intel is not regretting the price-performance of this processor. This is my first review after several years of using amazon...but this was the first product that moved me enough to write a review.
I was skeptical when I purchased the Asus EEE 1000HA. First I was unsure whether a netbook would fulfill my computing needs (heavy multi-tasking on internet (firefox), word, excel, powerpoint, and a music player for fun during painful data analysis). But, I do a lot of walking on campus carrying books and paperwork so I wanted something I could just throw into my backpack. Second there were so many similar netbooks, each with their own unique downfalls. I was looking at the acer aspire one, Lenovo s10, asus 904HA, asus 1000HA (and 1000HD), and hp mini 1000, and msi wind.
After doing some reading about each model I decided I wanted the 10 inch screen (I also saw an aspire one with a 9 inch screen and it was a tad too small). After going over the specs (almost the same for all) reviews, and support sites (it is important to read about common problems users are having with any electronics you are planning on buying) for each model, I decided that the 1000HA provided the best bang for the buck almost exclusively due to the ease of memory expansion.
So was it a good choice? Absolutely. I am not sure if it is better than the others, but I am very very happy.
First off...it is unwise to throw this computer (or any other) into your backpack. By no means does this computer feel delicate...but I quickly forged a strong bond with it and would hate if anything happened. When I walk around simply carry it in the soft case that comes with the computer it weighs very little so it is no inconvenience.
Also, because of the fantastic battery life no power cords are needed so that saves room in the backpack. With intense multi-tasking (multiple word and excel sheets, firefox 3 with several tabs open at once, music playing, and several background programs) I easily get over 5 hours of battery life which is, in actuality, far more than you would imagine.
Pros: almost no heat, easy to upgrade ram, great power saving functions
Cons: trackpad is annoying sometimes (I use a usb travel mouse most of the time though)
Note: don't expect duel core speeds, you have to enable the webcam before you can use it using the EEEpc tray utility.

I was very apprehensive about buying this netbook. A lot of people said not to waste my money on something so small! Well, after doing tons of research, reading review after review, and trying out other laptops and netbooks, I tookthe leap and bought the Asus on Amazon. Needless to say , I am not disappointd.
I use this handy little machine for school ( I am a nursing student) for taking notes in class. I was worried at first because my classes are small and I didn't want some huge machine whirring through the lectures. Not a problem here,the Asus runs very quietly and the only disruption is everyone complimenting me on my nifty little computer! The battery life is not really at the advertised 7 hours, but with the wifi turned off an dthe screen brightness turned down, I can get more than 5 hours. That gets me through all of my morning lectures with no problems.I also find that takingnotes this way is far more effective than handwriting, and I am not the fastest typist: )
This netbook is a great little machine! The screen is bright, clear and I love that it doesn't have a glossy screen ( however the outside case is a smudgy mess! not a deal breaker). The software included isn't bad, I like that it has Windows Xp and not Vista ( for obvious reasons ) and Microsoft works is fine for my purposes.
All in all , this is a great buy for someone looking for a supplemental computer. No regrets - great purchase! I'd been looking in to the ASUS 1000HA and others for a good month now. I was impressed with the many positive reviews and am adding the same feedback. This unit was actually better in person than I ever imagined from the pictures and reviews. I did the 2GB memory upgrade right away, as well, in just a few minutes (yes, after swapping memory, remember to F2 on startup in BIOS and F10 to save and you're done!) This item is a good buy. I originally purchased an Acer at a department store, and I had a problem connecting to my WiFi. This seems to be a much better buy and it has more memory and hard drive space than my desktop does.
The speed is good and I can scan the net with no problem. The color is very smart looking and it is light enough to carry. Some of the Dell and other notebooks, have only limited hard drive space.

I picked this up for mobile computing, was very impressed. Quality was very good, extremely easy to do my own upgrades to ( Ram & harddrive ). Touchpad a little sensitive ( had to turn down the double tap sensitivity ). Right hand caps key takes a few times to get used to, after that is not a problem. I wanted a small compact computer with a decent sized disk to play my music (all ripped using WMA Lossless) in my cube. I also wanted to be able to use it with my cellphone as a tethered modem (we aren't allowed to access external websites from work). I don't need anything to high-powered to run quicken or do my taxes... I just need a glorified MP3/web terminal. I also wanted something with a compact form factor to minimize desk space, be easy to carry around (I can fit this in my purse!) and at least 3 USB ports.

This netbook does its job very well. The display is bright and clear. The keyboard is solid, The trackpad is better than the one I have on my Lenovo ThinkPad T61 7658-RUU 14.1-inch Laptop (2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T8100 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 120 GB Hard Drive, XP Pro). Speed is tolerable for surfing -- particularly since I'm accessing it through a 3G connection. Speakers are actually pretty good -- again, better than my Lenovo.

When I'm out and about, it is fine to use as is. When I'm at my office, I actually hook up a Belkin F1DG102U Flip 2-Port KVM Switch with Audio Support (USB Connection) so that I can use my keyboard and mouse (and in theory, my monitor) with this netbook so that I can use it inconspicuously at work.

I used the CTL E09XPH 9-Inch 2goPC Laptop (900 MHz Intel Celeron Processor, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, XP Home) Bone/Grey which I HATED -- the screen layout on that system was much worse (the apostrophe key was in a really weird place and the screen resolution made surfing painful). That system was much more expensive, had a smaller disk (the EEE version I bought has a 120 GB disk vs the 40 GB on the CTL), slower, clunkier, only had 2 USB ports, and could not use a KVM switch for it.

Right now, you can get some really great deals on the 1000HA as of this writing (I was able to purchase mine for 300 bucks... only 75 bucks more than a 120 GB zune or iPod but with so much more functionality).

Again, if you are looking for something to run MS Office or do your taxes -- this is not the system for you. However, if you want a web terminal on the go, ebook reader, music player and basic communications, this system is perfect and it will allow you to save your back from lugging around a full-size laptop and save your laptop from the wear and tear associated with traveling.

I am writing this review on my 1000H. I had the opportunity to work with an MSI Wind and Acer Aspire before purchasing the Asus. My decision to purchase this model was based on a clear and non-refective screen, a best feel and size keyboard, easy access for upgrades, and a good software upgrade system with Asus.

The Asus has replaced my Toshiba for travel. The Asus is used as a control device for an SLR digital camera, it is used for editing web sites, it is used to control test equipment. It is as reliable and easy to use as a quality notebook. Finally, with the use of a preexisting USB DVD drive I can watch movies while inflight and I can burn copies of files.

The display is very clear, resolution is good and clear type fonts make the presentation better. The unit in standard form was a little slow with lots of background utilities running unnecessarily in the background. A little clean up in start up program selection corrected that problem.

I am not sure where the noise problem suggested by others is originating. I run mine in Super Performance mode and it is dead quiet and cool to the touch. The right shift key is no big deal at all, it took a half hour of use to no loonger notice the difference. The mouse buttons are stiff but no more so than any desk top mouse.

I had problems with WiFi connectivity. Sitting next to a Toshiba the Asus did not identify some networks the Toshiba easily found and the Asus seemed to have lots of problems maintaining a decent connection on a reasonable signal. This seemed to be cleared up with a current bios upgrade, 1501.

With the Asus built in BIOS upgrade function I was able to install the updated version with an automated download and install from the Asus site and an automated featured allows one click listing of all revised drivers for download and install.

I upgraded my system with more memory as XP and all of the resident utility programs require more than 1 MB and use disk cache with lower levels of performance. My system currently has 2 GB of $24 memory. I upgraded the 160 GB drive to a 320 GB drive of the same type and moved up from a 5400 RPM drive to a 7200 RPM drive with 16MB of cache. I also reorganized partitions to better suit my requirements.

I didn't buy the unit because it was inexpensive, I bought it because it was compact and for the reasons noted earlier. I think I probably added another $200 to its cost for the additional drive, expanded memory, a battery (see below) and a wrap around leather case.

I made a mistake and bought my unit from Best Buy. I needed the unit and it was local. I didn't realize that Best Buy sells a downgraded version of the product that had only a 4 cell battery. The ones sold on Amazon are 6 cells. This is a big issue as battery life with a 4 cell is less than 3 hours. I bought a 6 cell battery.

I am happy with the Asus 1000H. It is a solid unit, enjoyable to use and probably a really good value.

I've had my 1000HA for approximately a month now, and it has been a fun and capable little machine. I'd recommend purchasing a USB mouse for it if you intend to spend any significant amount of time sitting in front of it.

I upgraded the RAM to 2 Gigs (very easy to do), and installed Linux on the hard drive partition which is visible as the D drive when the Asus is delivered. Both OSes work just fine, with Windows XP handling the boot manager functions.

When the machine is booted, Windows XP will present a menu which asks which operating system you want to use. Normally, you'd use the up or down arrow key to highlight your choice and then hit "enter." Once in a great while, the BIOS does not pass the keystrokes to Windows XP, and you are forced to wait for the default operating system to boot after a countdown period expires. This annoyance seemed to happen about once in every 15 boots.

There were also some intermittent problems with the WiFi connection that seemed to be Asus-specific, although they were mostly annoying and not serious.

Recently, Asus in Taiwan put out a new BIOS image (dated 2/4/2009). Installing that BIOS seems to have corrected most problems. Should you run into similar problems, it would probably be a good idea to use the BIOS upgrade tool to go grab and install the latest BIOS version.

I've had it for about a month now. I sold a 15.4 inch HP on CL just before getting this one. BTW the purchaser of the HP bought it because it also had XP on it, just like the Eee PC has. That was the reason I bought it. It is so much easier to carry around, and it will do anything the larger notebooks will do, only better because it has a great OS---XP. The 10 inch screen seems much larger than the 8.9" on others. There are ways to load programs on it. If you have another PC with a DVD ROM on it you can open the program disk with explorer and send the contents to a USB drive, then load it on the Eee PC. I have used it to watch downloaded movies on my HD TV using VGA and sound cables. I have a external USB DVD burner, so I can do anything with this one that any other PC will do. My only regret is that I bought mine prior to this price drop. I have been using the Asus 1000HA for 2 months now. I have to say it is an amazing netbook. Compared to the other big brand netbooks this one has the best value.
The Good:
Amazingly fast: Even though it only has the atom processor clocked at 1.6GHZ it has enough speed to be booted up and running in less than one minute. The processor also supports hyper threading for whatever that is worth to you. It has 1GB of RAM which is plenty for most people, but is easily upgradable from the bottom. I had installed a 2GB module in about 2 minutes. It takes 2 screws to remove the bottom plate to expose the RAM and hard drive. The hard drive has plenty of room. 160GB is plenty for me, and is definitely nicer to have vs. the SSD drives. The 10 inch screen is much nicer to have vs. the 904HA. The 1024x600 resolution is good for viewing a whole web page width wise. The wireless is your basic b/g. It does the job well. If you are looking for wireless N, their is another netbook made by Asus that includes that. The webcam is a nice extra. It does its job and works for whatever program you desire. The battery does not protrude out the back at all. Plus the battery life is very long. It will last close to four hours with the wireless on doing simple tasks. The keyboard is a great size and very comfortable to use. See more in the bad.

I'll start with the keyboard. Everyone talks about it. The right shift key. It is located to the right of the up arrow key. So getting used to it takes some time. You usually find yourself hitting the up arrow instead. The glossy finish on the unit does show a lot of fingerprints, but that's what you get and nothing more. It does look awesome though. The last thing I can think of is the lack of bluetooth. I thought it was weird to not have bluetooth nowadays, but I guess not many people use it. If you need bluetooth, an alternative is to buy the small USB bluetooth adapters. It sticks out less than a half inch out of the side of the netbook. I never remove it because it is never in the way.

In the past I did not like to carry my 15" notebook with me when traveling or when having coffee in Starbucks. Now I can't live without it and people keep asking me about it all the time because it's so tiny and cute. I use webcam a lot of time and it is great no lag/skip. LCD quality is good. I bought this netbook after looking at several other brands. The eee pc is the best far as I can tell. Model 1000HA has a excellent keyboard and easy access to the ram. It feels well constructed. I had it since december and I am very happy with its performance. This boot up time is fast, the wifi is very good. The fan noise is minimal. I love the 10' screen, I would not go any smaller if you intent to surf the web. The best part is that it did come with the restore cd (i know, it does not have a optical drive, just get a external one).
It use my for watch video store on a 500 gb external drive, or streaming from my server. Works great. I would highly recommend the eee pc.

The 1000HA is quite an amazing little device. It boots faster than my Dell e1505, runs much longer (5.5 hours vs 2), and doesn't weigh a ton. Around the house we are usually surfing, looking up recipes, emailing, etc and lugging around the Dell was a bit of a pain.

My only minor complaints are the right shift key and "stiff" mouse buttons. The mouse buttons seem to be loosening up with use.

I really don't see myself buying another standard sized notebook. I use network shares to store files and don't game on notebooks so having a lot of power/space isn't a concern Netbooks are the future.

I want to thank all of you who took the time to write a review for the Asus 1000HA netbook. It worked as everyone had stated. I am very pleased with my netbook. I have been using my netbook for about two weeks without any issues. The additions I made to the computer are as follows:

1. I purchased the Kingston KVR667D2S5/2G 2GB 667MHz DDR2 Non-ECC CL5 SODIMM ValueRam memory. I replaced the 1 GB memory that came installed with the netbook before I turned it on the first time. 3. I purchased the Logitech V450 Nano wireless mouse. The reason it is called "Nano" is because the USB receiver used for the mouse is tiny and hardly noticeable. The small size of the receiver allows the case I purchased (item 4 below) to be used without any issues. I leave the USB receiver in the left USB port all the time, which still leaves me two USB ports on the right side of my netbook. The mouse has excellent features and works great with the netbook. I have had the Eee for about 2 months now and as far as I am concerned it does exactly what they advertised, not a bit more. I also got the 2 GB memory upgrade the day I purchased the Eee and have never run the machine without it so as this opinion does not work for the strictly stock model.

I use it for emails and doing papers and small spreadsheets for college. I bought an external DVD drive so I could load Microsoft Office, just because I prefer that over works, along with some other small programs like the ones that come with my textbooks for different classes.

Super small and sturdy with a nice keyboard I have big hands and have not struggled with it, except the right shift key. I reprogrammed the up arrow to be the shift key and all is good with life.

The battery last around 3.5 hours with the screen at half bright, the wireless on, McAfee running a scan, Outlook and a webpage in the background and actively working in Word.

I almost always use a USB mouse but the pad mouse thing is nice, the buttons were cumbersome to push at first but then I read another review than mentioned pushing the front and that works much better than the.

My gloss black cover is never without fingerprints, but I don't care.

The camera takes decent still shots, I have not used it too chat or make a video call yet so I cannot review that aspect.

A solid little computer for little dough works great for me, it just is not for they guy running graphic intense stuff or huge databases. For a college of business student to do homework it does its job.

I'm pretty pleased with this product. I do miss the CD/DVD drive at times, and it does take some getting used to to hit the shift key on my right hand for upper case letters. However, overall, it does what it's supposed to do. Spending a few extra dollars to increase the ram from 1 to 2 was definitely a good move. Someone reviewed the ram upgrade and had a real good tip as to how to make the extra Gb of RAM show up. First it only showed 1 Gb, when obviously I had installed the 2 Gb upgrade. (Find that tip - had to do with using function keys to get into the BIOS)

I have the 1000HA for over a month and am very happy with it. I did upgrade it with a 2GB module, and Chill Pill speakers (which I reviewed separately). Installation of the module was easy and I didn't encounter any of the problems other reviewers have mentioned. I'm a hunt and peck typist so the placement of the right shift key doesn't bother me. I usually use the left one anyway. It connected quickly with my router. I bought it because of it's size. I wanted a computer that I could use while watching TV and take to bed. I enjoy reading in bed so I bought a nice computer tray in Wal Mart which makes it easy to surf while in bed or by the TV. My only minor complaint is that the touch pad is very sensitive, just lightly brush it and your off. I have no problem with the right or left keys as others have mentioned. I would advice buying the white one as the black really shows finger marks. I bought this netbook for my 10 year old daughter. I bought this Windows XP model, just because there is no Linux equivalent of Eee PC 1000HA on sale(Asus, are you listening?). I promptly installed Eeebuntu Standard on it. Atheros wireless card was very very slow initially. I found the solution on web, that was the only issue I had to fix. Other than that every thing worked beautifully. Compiz 3D desktop effects worked like a charm(even while running live CD version!). Compiz performance is as good as on my Dell Latitude(Core 2 Duo T9300 2.50 GHz, 2 GB RAM, Quadro NVS 140M 512 MB graphics card). Eeebuntu looks cool on this netbook, Windows XP looks dated(as any electronic product that is 8 years old should) and rudimentary. Desktop cube in Eeebuntu is particularly helpful, virtually expanding the desktop real estate. In Windows XP I would feel claustrophobic due to small screen. I don't see us booting in to Windows as we got used to using latest and greatest software from Ubuntu. I got tired of waiting for Apple to introduce a low-cost light weight replacement for my ancient 12-inch iBook. Just needed something small and light for travel that could do fast internet surfing, e-mail downloading and word processing (I'm a freelance auto writer). I have a 24-inch iMac that I love as my main computer and spending $1300 or more on a new MacBook was overkill and oversized for my needs. If that's what you need, don't pass this baby by. Keyboard/touchpad not a major problem. Wi-Fi works great, screen resolution is excellent, speed with 2GB RAM upgrade (5 minute operation) is very good. Battery life running full tilt is almost 5 hours. Weighs a tad over 3 lbs plus the power cord that is neither bulky nor heavy. Acer too small and cheaply made. H-P nice but larger, costlier,poor reliability. Lovable little machine. Only negative is dealing with Windows after 9 yrs of reliable more intuitive Mac OSX. Had to dump 40 bucks on anti-virus software. I have owned the Asus Eee PC 1000HA for about a month now, and I couldn't be happier with the choice I made for a netbook. I was considering buying either this netbook, or the Acer Aspire One (same specs: 160GB HDD, XP Home, 1GB RAM, 6-cell battery, etc), or the Samsung NC-10 (same specs). Since all three netbooks had very good reviews, and same exact specs, I chose the Asus 1000HA because it had a 10-inch screen (Aspire One: 8.9 inch) and because it was cheaper than the Samsung. I paid $350.00 dollars for the netbook.

The size of this netbook is perfect, in my opinion. I believe 10 inches is the sweet spot for netbooks: not too small, and just the right weight so you almost don't even feel it is in a bag with other things (6-cell battery is the heavy component - but well worth it).

I purchased 2GB RAM, and installed it in the netbook. This took no longer than 10 minutes - very straightforward (For instructions try YouTube).

Pros:
-Battery Life: absolutely amazing battery life. I get about 5-5.5 hours while chatting, word processing, web-surfing, etc. One important thing to note is that the screen of the laptop is very bright. Thus, turning the screen to about 50% brightness to increase battery life is not a sacrifice like it is on other laptops. I prefer the brightness at 40% whether it's plugged in, or on battery power.
-Speed: the netbook is decently speedy (the 2GB RAM may help also). I have not noticed considerable lag in doing any tasks so far (though I haven't tried doing anything like video processing, etc). I have also installed Windows 7 beta operating system alongside the XP Home it comes with, and that also works excellent on this netbook - I found that pleasantly surprising :).
-Small, light-weight: The Asus 1000HA is not the lightest netbook you can get (esp. with the 6-cell battery), but it is small enough and light enough that it's never a hassle to carry it around. I take it almost everywhere with me.
-Quick-start up: in Windows XP Home, the laptop turns on VERY quickly (30 seconds top). Also from stand-by mode, in about 10 seconds you can be surfing the web. Perhaps it is a combination of the operating system, and the wifi device driver, but I was very surprised at how quickly the laptop connects to a wireless network. From standby, less than a second after you can see your desktop, the wireless network indicator is already blinking, indicating internet connection - amazing!.

Cons:
-As already mentioned, the right shift key is small (the size of a letter key) and seemingly misplaced. I don't use the right shift key very often, so it has not been a problem for me.
-Also, the touchpad buttons are a bit hard to press, but most people use tapping anyhow, so this is also a non-issue.

Overall, I'm very happy with my Eee PC, and would recommend it to everyone that needs a laptop to carry around frequently.

I had purchased this Asus Eee PC 1000HA netbook to do what I couldn't with my Dell Studio 17. The 17 inch laptop was too large to carry around and to comfortably couch surf.

I purchased the 1000HA from JR amazon store on Friday night and received it Tuesday afternoon.

I opened the box and finally put to rest any worries I have with what this netbook actually looks like. Pictures on the net make this netbook look larger and uglier then what I see in front of me.

After the 15 minutes of typical XP setup, the netbook came to life. The LCD was bright and sharp. I am happy I went for the 10.2 inch screen. Typing on the keyboard is not as excruciating as I initially thought, the right shift key for me is not that big of deal. The keys are a nice size and tactile feel. I was concerned about the keyboard, HP makes a fantastic keyboard and I fell in love when I played with it; however, when comparing the entire packages for each, HP's price for less specs was not worth it to me.

The battery power, under real life circumstances [on power save mode, WIFI running full time, screen 50% brightness, utilizing internet explorer and open office] is lasting 5 to 5.5 hours.

I had ordered the 2 gig stick of ram; however, after a few hours of use, I haven't been disappointed in the speed of this netbook, especially on power save mode. I had only heard the fan come on once, when I was running the netbook in bed, straddling my lap, without a flat book or lap board.

Net surfing has been pleasant with the smaller screen. I utilize the full screen option and I changed the text size to large.

Now onto the infamous track pad buttons... what is everyone's problem with the buttons? I have yet to botch a click and drag or a double click. After two initial clicks, I learned that you need to click the buttons on the slanted angle, piece of cake. I am enjoying the track pad gestures. You need to learn these useful moves.

In closing, I think it is easier to point out my only disappointment, the netbook looks a little clunkier then it's competition; however, the price for the specs is terrific.

Buy this netbook, you are buying quality material with better specs then the competition for a lesser price. pros: ease of adding memory, good size, adequate screen (but 1280x800 resolution would be nice option for these machines). Quick startup and shut down, convenient stand-by mode when screen is closed. One very positive surprise is how useful the touchpad "gestures" are after a few days of practice and adjusting the sensitivity settings. I never thought I'd use that feature.

cons: the misplaced right shift key has turned out to be a surprisingly big hassle for me. I knew about it but did not think of myself as a touch typist so I did not think it would be a problem, but this turns out to be a major frustration because the arrow keys are where shift should be so the cursor ends up in the wrong place and it takes quite a bit of effort to get back to where you were. Shame on ASUS (and shame me especially) for not listening to earlier customer reviews.

I would not recommend this machine without a huge caveat regarding the silly misplacement of the SHIFT KEY. The Asus Eee PC 1000HA Netbook was purchased after Christmas and has worked well since. As board secretary-treasurer, I use it to present data and to record the board meeting minutes. The keyboard works well except for the misplaced right shift key. I use a wireless outboard mouse. My software programs are MS Word 2003 and Excel 2003 which loaded easily from a LiteOn 20x Dvd device. My antivirus program is the Vipre which was chosen because of its low energy requirement. With this setup, I can easily get 4 1/2 hours of work done with battery power.

Amazon delivered the netbook within 4 days of online purchase. Most of my online purchases are from Amazon. I want to thank my brother Rocky for recommending that I purchase the Asus Eee PC 1000HA. I've owned this netbook for about a month now and finally have enough experience for a good review.

Simply put: this is an amazing machine.

The hardware is rock solid. The Intel Atom processor is a dream on this type of machine. Startup and shutdown happen faster than any computer I've owned. The screen is very nice, its much more clear than my Dell laptop. The battery lasts forever and charges quickly. The touch-pad is also great but I am a bit hesitant on the mouse buttons...they feel a little too mechanical. However, they also feel solid so I don't worry about them going bust in a year.

The keyboard is the only component that could be considered a negative but keep in mind that ALL netbook keyboards will be like this. Asus says its 90% the size of a regular keyboard and that's just small enough to be slightly annoying. I find myself "hunting and pecking" to type on the EeePC, I just can't put my fingers in the "home position". However, I'm a large man so my fingers and hands are probably much bigger than the average person. Just keep in mind that netbooks weren't meant to write a novel or research report on and you'll be fine.

I honestly have no complaints. This netbook has done everything I've wanted it to do and then some. It is a solid performing, well built machine.

Tip: the difference between this model and the 1000H is that the HA is missing bluetooth and the 'N' standard of wifi. This computer rocks. I bought this model because of the battery size and wanted to be able to be portable for a longer period of time. But no matter what version you choose, you can not go wrong purchasing an Asus.

I have ran every bit of software I need and this thing runs flawlessly. The 10 inch screen is bigger than you think and has an excellent image. It's fast, portable, and the battery life has been good for 5.5 hours with the CPU running in super mode, wireless on, and screen brightness up.

I bought this after considering the HP Mini-Note and the Acer Aspire One. Compared to these (and you have to dig to find this out), the Asus has more: 1. L2 cache. Twice as much actually as either of the others.

2. VERY easy to install additional RAM. This is a bigger deal than many think because it is vital to being happy with one of these little guys on a long term basis. Adding RAM to the Acer means a complete disassembly.

3. The Acer has a lot of reliability issues. The fan in the darn thing seems to fail a lot and support is an issue. I own an EEE 701 (the very first netbook). I thought it had failed when actually just the charger failed. When I called support, they were absolutely excellent. They took full charge of the issue and could not have been better about resolving my problem. Fact is, I fixed it with a $12.00 replacement from E-bay.

4. The thermal characteristics of the Asus are far better than either of the other products. The other two get very warm in your lap. This is a direct indication of inefficient operation and a good indicator that something is working too hard. Beware of hot electronics...

5. Until Acer introduces a 10 inch screen, the two machines are not really comparable. 8.9 inches is just too small (in my opinion). Anything over 10.5 is not a netbook. I find the 10 inch screen optimal for this type of use.

6. The Seagate hard drive in the Asus runs at 5600 rpm. The HP runs at 4600. Why they did this is beyond me, but I bet on the Seagate and I know that it is one of the most rugged available. I don't know what he HP runs, but giving up that mechanical speed, means sacrificing boot time for the life of the machine.

7. The keyboard is excellent. Many complain about the shift key being small and they miss it. Heck I miss it when it's big, so for me it's not a problem any more than the big one is. While it is small, it's placed well so I hit it as much as I hit the big one (or more accurately, miss it as much). This criticism is quibbling I think.

The cons are few. HP is tops in fit and finish. They have always had beautiful products and the Mini-Note is no exception. Side by side the HP is a far more attractive product. In my opinion, the HP is a closer competitor to the Asus because of the screen size. The Acer should not be compared to the 1000 HA....

I think enough has been said in other reviews already. So I'll keep it short.
This little computer is amazing. I love it and am happy I bought it.
It's fast, the wireless card works flawlessly and the webcam has a very good quality. I also like that the USB ports are located on both sides of the PC. I have another laptop that bundles all USB ports in one area and some of them are unusable when a slightly bigger USB stick is used. The 1000HA doesn't have this problem.
Battery life is okay, but not as good as advertised. I get about +/- 4 hours. The keyboard is fine, just takes a little getting used to.
I don't notice many fingerprints on the shiny surface. Mine is white and looks great.

I bought the machine after reading the reviews here. I also bought the 2 GB RAM upgrade - that's where I went wrong. The machine worked fine out of the box. I spent several hours installing programs. Then I put the new RAM in. It's pretty easy. You unscrew two screws, take out the old module, and insert the new one. I did and then turned on the machine or I tried to. It was dead. No hard drive light. I called Asus tech support, it took a while for them to answer, but they concluded that the machine was a corpse. So I've sent it back. It looked like a pretty good value before it died. I don't know how installing a new RAM module would kill a hard drive (and neither did Asus tech support), but that's what happened. The machine ran fine with 1 GB. So I think if you decide to make the plunge and buy one be careful about fooling around with the innards of the computer. I sent it back. It was in my house for about 12 hours. I've owned dozens of computers and have six now. None has ever met its maker this quickly.

When my laptop died recently, I decided to replace it with this netbook.

The first thing I did was install Kubuntu ([...]) on it. I wanted something lighter weight, more configurable, and more secure than Windows XP. It installed without any problems, and with some add-ons, I have everything working perfectly.

The keyboard does take some getting used to, but I'm adjusting. Also the screen is pretty small (which is the point, isn't it?), so I've gotten in the habit of looking at everything in full-screen mode.

With Wifi on and typical usage, the battery lasts about 4 hours, and it charges quickly. That's plenty enough time for my purposes, and I haven't had any issues with it.

It's ultra-portable and very handy. Part of the reason we chose this is because my wife and I will be taking a trip to China soon, and we plan to take this with us. It was a good decision. The other day, I picked up her laptop (15.4" screen and 6 lbs), and I had to exclaim, "It's huge!"

I recently bought an Asus EEE1000ha net book which i'm typing this review on right now. At first, i was considering--like many others-- the Acer Aspire one. After comparing the 2 net books, i decided to buy the Asus for a variety of reasons.

#1) the screen is bigger on the asus than the acer. I figured that since both computers would be acceptable in terms of size, my eyes would probably thank me for the slightly larger screen.

#2) the key board size is bigger on the asus. Because i'm a student and i therefore work hours at a time on the computer, i decided to go with the asus. I at first thought that if i did get the acer, i could just get a keyboard and plug it in, but i go to the library alot and i don't want to carry a keyboard... Asus claims that the EEE pc's keyboard is approximately 95% the size of a normal laptops keyboard where as the Acer's is much smaller. I think Asus's percentage is accurate--the keyboard is comfortable and i can touch type with only a few extra errors.

#3) Upgrading ram memory. On the Asus, the memory is very easy to get to as opposed to the acer aspire one (from what i've heard). For this particular netbook, you are able to upgrade to 2 gb ram as opposed to 1.5 ram for the Acer Aspire one. I was able to upgrade the ram very easily. After reading a few reviews on amazon and searching for an instructional video on youtube, i was done with the project in 5 minutes. I spent more time looking for that damn tiny screwdriver that was in some random drawer. However, though it's easy, you need to do a little research before hand to figure out how to do it.

#4) i was also attracted to the battery life of the Asus. A long time ago, i bought a toshiba laptop that had enough battery power for about 45 minutes fully charged; i was pretty pissed off when i couldn't even get through a full 1 hour class. Asus claims that the battery life on the 6 cell batter for this particular computer is about 7 hours. Though, i haven't reached that number (partly because i'm not running on the lowest power settings and i haven't drained the battery enough and recharged it to get its full potential) i have been on this computer for about 4 hours on medium settings. In contrast the acer aspire 1 has a battery life of about 5.5 (claims the company).

overall, i'm very happy with this netbook. It is light, and very portable. It is smaller than some of my textbooks and i can just throw it in the bag and go to class or to the library. It has enough power to get through all i need to do. It is pretty fast, especially with the 2 gb ram upgrade. The keyboard is very comfortable. This netbook also has camera which is nice. For a long time, i was biased towards the Acer Aspire one (partly because blue is my favorite color) but after some careful thought, i believe i made the right choice.
