I am disapointed in the EeePC in that it does not appear to have the ability to disable the left click function of the touchpad. The touchpad makes the computer almost unusable.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

My friend bought it for me about 3 weeks ago.
I got it yestrday.
When I turned it on everything seemed fine.
But then while working the screen just turns green or red and the laptop does not react on any clicks.
The other type of strahge behavior: suddenly the image on the screen trembles.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony

i loved this netbook as soon as i got it. its so sturdy and efficiently designed. the keyboard is the perfect size for my hands and is nice and quiet to type on. luckily, i don't use the right shift key, so its placement was not a problem for me. above the keyboard are 4 function buttons. 1 turns off the monitor, another switches between screen resolutions, and the remaining two you can set to do anything. the trackpad is amazing. very roomy and smooth. the two buttons below it are difficult to push, but i don't use them anyway so it's not a problem. the smartpad allows you to click by tapping one finger, scroll by dragging two fingers, and many other funtions that are widely helpful. the netbook isn't heavy at all so it's highly practical to use this as your home computer and your travel computer. as a student, i'll be taking it with me to school and everywhere else then bringing it home to sit down at the desk or lay in bed. if i have wi-fi and full screen brightness enabled, i'll get about 3-4 hours of battery life. i was scared that i wouldnt like the way the netbook is tilted because of the battery. the tilt actually makes typing for comfortable and doesn't bother me at all. i'm very satisfied with my choice- and very happy that i didnt go with the acer aspire one! it was $375 shipped. definately worth itGet more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

I've had this for a few days now and it is just great. I have a laptop also but it has Vista OP on it and it sucks. XP really is better. I use this to surf the net and email. I received my netbook about a week or so ago and have kept it busy ever since. I immediately added the 2GB ram instead of the 1GB it comes with. I installed iTunes and converted several WMA CD files over and docked an iPod with it, and downloaded some songs and movies. I connected my external USB DVD burner and loaded MS Office and 3 digital movie copies on it. I moved all of my digital photos onto it. So far I have found no PC performance issues with any of the above tasks.

I really did not want a bulky 15" laptop, but I was concerned about the small screen so I chose the 10" model. I have been very pleased with how well I can view the screen despite its small size. I do not have any issues with it, and am thrilled to be able to tote this thing around as simply as I do.

The battery life is amazing as well. I rode in a car the other day for 4 hours while converting my WMA files into iTunes. The gauge still showed over an hour remaining. Perhaps at the lowest power setting you could even get the advertised 7 hours out of it, but I have not tried.

As people have mentioned, there is no caps lock key light indicator but that does not bother me at all. If you have inadvertently left it on, many programs alert you to that or you notice it once you begin typing. The shift key on the right is pretty annoying to me because I am a fast typist that uses both shift keys. I find myself hitting the up arrow key because that is really where the shift should be. I understand there is a key tweak program out there to change the key programming but I haven't bothered with that yet. The case does show fingerprints pretty bad, but the cloth they package with it does an amazing job making it look as good as new.

Overall I give this five stars because it is perfect for me. I really feel this to be the best one out there for the money, since you get the 10" screen, the large 160GB hard drive, Windows XP, and the 6 cell battery. This is an amazing portable laptop! The small screen and light weight make it one of the better laptops I've had. That said, I do have a couple complaints:

1) The odd placement of the right shift key. I read about it in other reviews and it was a fair assessment. I got used to it early enough and am even typing on it right now.

2) No CD drive. Thus is the nature of a netbook and I was ready for that going into it but it is somewhat annoying.

3) Every once in a while, when I hit a key, it will type it twice. It's not a consistent problem which makes it strange but it does happen from time to time.

Other than that, you just have your garden variety Windows B.S. to contend with, and you can't very well hold that against Asus. So, kudos, Asus, on an amazing laptop. If ever I need another Windows machine, I will probably turn to you.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

I did a lot of checking and finally decided on this netbook and I am very happy with my choice. Although the screen is only 1024 x 600 pixels I must say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the clarity of the screen. It is very clear. Much clearer in fact than other bigger laptops screens I have looked at. I think somehow this LCD seems to represent colors better. Like black is really black and colors are very vibrant. The big HD Disk Drive seems very fast and did better in my speed tests than drives in my Full Tower Computer. Plays every video I've thrown at it, and cruises the internet very well. The main reason I bought this, the battery life, is superb. Over a period of 5 days I have used this 1/2 hour to an hour each day, and finally needed to recharge today. So it does seems to hold charge OK when not in use in my experience. Build quality feels superb. Sound is great. The keyboard is perfect for me, and I have had no problems with it. I think they have found the perfect balance with weight and size. If you want to be able to cruise the internet, read email, play music, watch videos, etc. from anywhere buy this.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

This is a tip more than a review. When I attempted to play DiVX encoded movies on my 1000HA/XP there was no audio. You will need to download and install the K-Lite Codec Pack...a very simple install that anyone can do. Just Google "K-Lite Codec Pack" for the free download site.

As for the 1000HA/XP, it is an outstanding unit. Long battery life, bright and nicely sized screen, and on and on. I am perfectly satisfied with it and would definitely recommend it. Asus has a nice forum group at their website to help with any issues you may have...which is where the above tip came from...from a guy in Russia no less.

Negatives have been well commented upon. Fingerprints on the cover. Yup, but who cares? Stiff right and left click buttons. Just thumb the front edge of the buttons as suggested elsewhere. No big deal. Inconvenient right shift key location. I, and apparently every other touch typist in the world, will hit the up-arrow key instead of the right shift key. This sure makes a mess of whatever you're typing but the resulting mess is easily corrected. We'll just have to remember to stretch a little more for that key. No optical drive. I'd love to have had one included but if you keep on adding stuff you'll have a laptop, not a netbook. Yeh, these are downers but, IMHO, they're like a pimple on a flea's [...] compared to the rest of the excellent package. Don't hesitate to buy one of these guys. ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony

I had previously owned a 15 inch $1099 Win XP Dell Inspiron laptop; a 12 inch $999 Vista Dell XPS laptop and a 15 inch $599 Win XP Compaq laptop. I was disappointed with all of these expensive laptops but I am extremely pleased with the 10 inch 6 cell Asus eeepc 1000 HA which I only paid $389!

It is just the right size and weight and the battery life is 4 to 5 hours which is at least 2 hours longer than my expensive laptops. I thought not having a DVD drive would be a handicap but the $39 "DVD Cloner 6" software program can convert a DVD movie disc into a 4 gig movie file using my desktop PC which can then be transferred to my Asus 1000HA. I am converting all my personal movies for my personal use similar to my conversion from music CDs into MP3. A CD/DVD drive may become obsolete like a floppy drive with jump drives approaching 32 gig and more.

I used an old HP external CD drive to load windows XP programs like Ghost and Partition magic. I will never use Windows Vista again since the bootup and shutdown time on my Asus eeepc is twice as fast.

The 10 inch screen is bright and detailed. Watching a converted DVD movie is a pleasure and the smaller screen guarantees you won't run out of battery life. The charging brick is 1/3 the size of a regular notebook's charging brick. Opening the large bottom cover plate also provide complete access to the RAM memory, 160 gig hard drive and wireless card. This means the Asus eeepc 1000HA is easily upgradable which you can't say the same for the other netbooks.

The weaknesses of a difficult touch pad button and fingerprints are true...but these are minor weaknesses that I can accept given all of the advantage of upgradability, price, weight, battery life and quality. A good wireless mouse solves the weaknesses with the touch pad button.

Please note that I have built three desktops computers with Asus motherboards and I never had any problems with Asus products. Asus invented this class of netbooks and they are much better than similar netbooks from HP, Dell and Acer. The Asus eeepc 1000HA is a highly recommended product. Since many excellent & detailed reviews are already posted, I just wanted to add few excellent things about eee 1000HA. This machine is very well built. Sturdy and compact.

1. The 10" screen and the keyboard. I am SO glad that I chose this over 900HA. I have short but stocky fingers and this keyboard is comfortable (900HA will be too small for me). I am not a touch typist, so the "right shift" key doesn't bother me. Screen is also very comfortable, I don't think I could use 8.9" screen for a long time, but this 10" screen makes computing comfortable.
2. The screen is very bright and clear. I use medium setting and it is still bright enough for me.
3. I installed eeebuntu 2.0 (modified Ubuntu 8.10 for eee netbooks) in the second partition. The drive comes in default two partitions: (C:) and (D:). I am now able to dual boot with XP and eebuntu Linux. Both work excellently. Both wireless & webcam work out of the box in eeebuntu (but Skype must be installed separately to use the webcam). If interested, visit www.eeebuntu.org
4. This netbook is powerful enough for me to use: MS Office, Firefox, and several other applications were open simultaneously and they did not slow down the performance. I did NOT upgrade the RAM to 2GB.
5. The netbook is generally quiet, but you could hear the fan running, but quietly.
6. Battery lasted 5+ hours (wifi enabled and both USB flash drive and mouse connected). NOTE: in order to maximize your battery life and capacity you must fully charge the battery and then fully drained them (till you cannot boot up at all). This must be done 2 or 3 times.
7. Track pad is adequate, but I use mini mouse. The left and right clicks are not too rigid as others have reported. I found them to be normal compare to my other notebooks. NOTE: It seems that scroll function (two fingers on the middle of the trackpad) works well with most of the applications (i.e., MS Word, Opera, IE, etc), but it doesn't work well with the Mozilla products (Firefox 3.0 and Thuderbird 2.0).
8. I was able to install MS Office and other applications through 1 GB USB Flash Drive & 1GB SD card (just "copy and paste" -- copy from CD and paste to Flash Drive). Then just double click "setup" or "install" in eee 1000HA. I did this with all other applications several times. And after the installation, I formatted the flash drive/SD card and then copy & pasted other applications to install.

This is very beautiful and functional netbook. BUT this does not replace your desktop or 15.4" laptops. It is portable, powerful, and useful netbook that will enhance your lifestyle.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony

I bought my ASUS EEE pc about a week ago to replace a laptop that had some liquor spilled on it (I know...) and have yet to find anything to dislike. It is important to point out the buttons are easily pressed around the outside of the laptop. It doesn't come with a CD drive but I bought 24x USB External Slim CD-ROM Drive (Black) for a cheap drive to install Microsoft Office and run additional CD's that come along with my college textbooks. The drive plugs into one of the 3 USB ports and gets the job done. This notebook is perfect for students, such as myself, for easy transport to and from class. The SD slot is convenient for extra storage and for importing pictures. I don't believe the processing power is high enough to run online games like WoW or anything like that, but like I said... for kids and students, it's perfect for word processing, e-mail, MySpace, flash games... I have no complaints and so glad I bought this product! I honestly think this is a great product, but the one I received was defective. The LCD screen had vertical lines where the pixels have gone bad. Also it may have been a used machine, because when I tryed to register it with Asus they returned that the serial # had already been registered. The return and refund process was satisfactory and without hitch. I am ordering another one to see if I have better luck.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

This has been a nice little puter and I'm glad I bought it. It's for travel and going to hot spots over lunch, etc. Because of the small screen (which really isn't a problem) I removed most menus from IE which removed the convenient Back button. It's been no problem because I programmed the touch pad to to internet back when I tap three fingers. The other features of the touch pad (like two finger scrolling) are also really nice. The L and R click buttons are a little stiff and hard to push but with the programable touchpad you hardly need to push either one. Warning: If you are a serious typer (like a student needing to type a paper, etc.)I would think of buying a regular laptop or another 10 inch machine like a Samsung NC10 with a 6 cell battery and FULL size Right shift key. I've kinda got used to it but it drives my wife crazy. The small shift key is the ONLY problem I have with the machine. Unless you have real fat fingers, the keyboard is otherwise OK for typing.
The battery lasts quite a long time. I typically get 5 hours with the screen turned down slightly and the settings on low power.

The sound from the speakers is rather soft even a full volume but I use headphones anyway.

Amazon shipped real fast and is a great seller. I could have got the machine a few dollars cheaper from another less famous retailer but chose Amazon due to their reliability and support.

This little thing is almost perfect. Very good processor (fast and energy efficient), battery life is about 5 hours! Good bright 10 in. screen, hard drive size is very good for an ultra portable, 1GB is enough for Win XP but consider upgrading to 2GB depending on what you'll be running. Camera works great for video chat, keybord has a pretty good size, much better than the Asus 701 / 901 family, sound is ok for its size. Internal WiFi detects networks so far away which my dell notebook does not. I had one problem with mine: First boot caused a memory dump when Windows was starting and then I couldn't restart it. I had to reinstall Windows (not so easy as it does not have an optical drive) and now it runs flawlessly. An external dvd rom drive may be very useful. I recommend it.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

There is not a lot i can say about these systems that has not been said already.

I chose the 1000HA over countless other models and manufacturer's because of the hard drive speed exceeding inexpensive solid-state drive speed; the multi-touch trackpad; the relatively bountiful standard ports available as opposed to proprietary; and for the 6-cell battery.

I am impressed with the performance all around after not having used a netbook regularly.

I would definitely recommend an Asus EEE 1000-line system, and personally went with this one because i don't need the wireless-N, or bluetooth, and wanted to save the money.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

We went by the previous reviews and we were not disappointed. XP is way better than Vista. The 6 cell battery lasts a little less than the 6 hours but never a problem for an evenings light computing. ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony

Just recieved my Eee 1000HA this morning, and I was completely in love with it almost right out of the box! I bought this to replace my old Dell Latitude CPi, and I must say that the Eee PC will see more use. I found that the stiffness of the mouse buttons were about the same as those on the Dell, and while a bit firm, were not at all difficult to use. The placement of the right shift key does take some getting used to, but on the whole, I find this keyboard easier to use than the one on the Dell. I have small hands, so the Eee's keyboard is perfectly sized for me.

The few issues I've had with the laptop thus far are with the touchpad itself. It works fine for traditional use, but as far as the commands go, it's not especially responsive. I have no problem with the "zoom out" command, but scrolling is spotty at best and I find it extremely difficult to get it to zoom in. However, these are minor issues for me since I've become accustomed to using the arrow keys to scroll on laptops and usually just click on the icons to zoom in and out.

All in all, this laptop is a great product and I would most definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a quality netbook.

I recently purchased the 1000HA as an upgrade for my EEE900. I like the quickness of start up and the keyboard doesn't bother me like some folks but I still can't get it to connect to my wireless system. I have gone online to ASUS Support and managed after about an hour to reach the server when it wasn't busy and pulled down a list of possible fixes. None work. I called and am on a waiting list for a call back from ASUS. I guess I have to sit next to my phone for 2 days (according to ASUS) until they call me. Really disappointed by that. What is the point of a netbook if you can't get connected wirelessly? If I can't fix it soon I'll have to send it back. Shame that for eveything else seems okay so far. I suppose this could be my last ASUS.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

I really wanted to like the 1000HA - for all the positive reasons expressed in the reviews. I had three units with all the same problems, so I finally gave up on the 1000HA and bought the Samsung NC10 (which I have now had for two weeks or so - home run with the first unit).

I had two main problems with the 1000HA: speakers crackled and the housing around the battery quickly loosened up so that too much play developed around the battery. Mind you, I experienced these problems with three different units.

If these kinds of issues don't bother you, the 1000HA is otherwise a great machine. I cannot add much to what has already been put here. This is a great little machine. Yes, the right shift key is annoying as heck, but I guess I'll adapt.

One caution: Go put your hands on one of these or a similar one before you buy it. I tried the Acer at Office Depot and it was a no sale, I was clicking numbers half the time on reach ups and missing the space bar all the time in a quick typing test. I'm a big guy, but I have little hands for a guy my size and this one is just right (except for that stupid shift key).Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

There are many great reviews already for this netbook. I just want to tell you about three must have items to purchase with it.
1. Like everyone else talks about - get the 2 GB memory (very easy install) - purchase details located in other peoples reviews.
2. Want bluetooth? For $.99 (currently) purchase the following: Bluetooth v2.0 Class 2 Mini USB Dongle
3. I got the Asus 1000ha with a 2gb RAM module for upgrade for a little over $400, shipping included from Amazon.

My previous computer was a 15' dell inspiron 1501, with dual core, 2gb ram, and a pretty good machine overall. Downside of it is how heavy it is when you need to haul it around (specially with a hig capacity battery), the Asus looked like a good replacement for when you want email and maybe some picture viewing while on vacation.

The Asus 1000ha computer is so light, you can carry it around all the time. Battery life is awesome, 4 to 6 hours, depending on your settings.
Keyboard is really good to use, just keep in mind the Shift button on the right, other than that pretty good.

Touchpad is easy to use, not used to the multitouch zooming feature yet, and the buttons are not as hard as some others reviewwers mentioned.

This little computer has integrated cammera, mic and speakers, so you're ready for skype right of the box (no need to plug in a mic loke on my old dell).

I'm planning to use the Asus for online classes, and it is not slow at all compared to my previous laptop. XP is a plus, since Vista can really suck a lot of resources (I got an HP desktop quadcore and is sooo slow on vista, it's a shame).

I also looked at 11.1' sony but they were at least 3 times as expensive and they all came with vista.

Pros:
Size and weight
Value
Included carrying sleeve
Integrated webcam, speakers and mic
Awesome battery life

Cons:
no dvd
keyboard (specially right shift) can take a little time to get used to

For the value and form factor I would definitevely buy it again.

Hope this helps in your decision. Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

This computer has a lot of positive attributes, but it has one show stopper: The right shift key has been moved over from its normal position to the extreme right of the keyboard. The "/" key is where the shift key should be. You have to reach over all of the arrow keys to get to the shift key. This makes the keyboard difficult or impossible to use for touch typing by those of us who are used to standard keyboards. I recommend the MSI Wind which has a good keyboard and longer battery life.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

I've had my new little toy for about a week now & I just love it! This will be the PC thaat travels with me from now on. Yes the mouse buttons are an issue but, I prefere a wireless mouse anyway. I have no problem with the right Shift button as some have mentioned. The battery lasts about 4.5 to 5 hours & it is a fingerprint magnet (mine is black) but, it cleans easily.
The screen is brite & is non reflective (a real plus for me) & there is no right/left scrolling in I.E. like you would have on the 9" models. There is no "crapware" on the eeePC either.
My only (minor) gripe is in finding a nice little case for it that holds accesories too. The slipcase that comes with it is great for storing the unit - & I can fit the charger in too, but that's it. Amazon had a real nice looking bag (Case Logic) but, it's sold out (everywhere).
I Love my eeePC!

Fearing that I may get another "shill" reply...

I love it. Other positive reviewers have said most of what needs to be said, so rather than go over all the things I like about this clean, crisp, incredibly lightweight, and very useful laptop let me just mention my take on one characteristic which has been subject of some negative mention, the mouse buttons:

Why push'em at all? If you read the user guide on the mouse (in Control Panel > Mouse) you'll see that it can count your fingers. Drag two fingers up and down and you can emulate a wheel mouse. To top that off, if you drag two fingers side to side you're using a sideways wheel mouse, scrolling from side to side to view any off-screen content, which I'd never seen anywhere else. A three finger tap on the touch pad is a "right-click". I've lived with touchpad laptops for some years now and have never seen a touch pad I find so useful. It'll do more than I've even bothered to learn yet.
Yes, the keyboard is a touch crowded. I'm a seriously fatfingered old guy who can, nonetheless, touch type over fifty words a minute. Not on this machine. I knew that when I bought it: I mean, they advertised the keyboard as "95% full size." Big hands, little computer, maybe I'll have to adapt. OK.
I bet my next bigger laptop is an ASUS machine too. And it won't be another 17" giant like my ol' HP, either. Just big enough to have a 100% keyboard and a cd/dvd drive. And this wonderful touch pad mouse.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

My little Asus Eee PC1000HA arrived yesterday early afternoon, and I've been on it ever since, doing work and testing its potential. I'm delighted with it overall--it's no surprise that, as of December 31, 2008, it's sold out at Amazon. I did a huge amount of research on netbooks before purchasing this, and the other Amazon reviewers (for all the different netbooks researched) were most helpful. Their warning that this is only an atom processor is a good one--this doesn't work as fast as my five year old Gateway 200XL (XP pro, centrino processor, 1.6mhz, 512mb RAM, 60gb hd), which I just loved until it ran out of hard drive space and could not be upgraded. On the other hand, the Eee PC1000HA really is great for internet and word processing--what it is designed to do. I had to turn off various background-working programs, like webshots and google indexing, but these are still useful, within limits. Don't run an anti-virus scan while working, either. When all the background programs were turned off, internet access, even internet video, was speedy on my wireless connection, with no gaps (or gasps) at all.

Here's what I really like about this machine:
1) It's pretty quiet--much quieter than the old Sony Vaio picturebook I used to use. I'm a student, and the Eee PC will not draw the negative attention in a small graduate class the way the Sony picturebook did (and so I had to stop using the Sony and sell it).

2) The screen is clear and the 10.2 inch display is quite adequate. I don't really miss a bigger screen at all.

3) The keyboard really is do-able (except for that blasted right shift key--it is quite a stretch for my little finger, even with a smaller keyboard). But that is adjustable, too. (See previous reviewer regarding downloading free software that allows users to change keys.)

4) I can watch my news video clips with no lags at all.

5) BATTERY LIFE IS GREAT! It really is 7 hours with (a) LCD lighted display turned down all the way, (b) wireless off. In other words, if all you have to do is word processing, you can do it. Otherwise, 6 hrs with wireless and lowest light LCD, and 5 hrs with wireless and highest light LCD.

6) The upgradeability is the best on any machine I've ever seen! Not only are the RAM and hard drive easily removable and replacable, but so is the wireless adapter! Now THAT is really COOL! Still, I'm quite pleased with the wireless and its speediness.

What I don't like:

1) I don't like this touchpad so much. Now, don't get me wrong--I prefer touchpads to a mouse, but I really miss the old synaptic touchpads. I could do all kinds of great things with the synaptic touchpads of the olden days, and all with one finger! Now I have to learn a whole new touchpad sign language, and even then, the touchpad is not as responsive as I'm used to on older laptops. The scrolling, for example, is inconsistent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The Elantech smart pad is not as easily programmable as the old synaptic touchpad on my Gateway 200XL. What ever happened to Synaptic? Why throw away what was great? On the other hand, this touch pad still does not drive me crazy the way the touchpad does on machines like the HP Pavilion 2660SE. So, Elantech is a step in the right direction, at least, even if it hasn't gotten as far as what the old synaptic touchpad could do with just ONE little finger (not two or three). That said, even when you take the time to learn the new sign language, the Elantech touchpad still doesn't scroll as easily as a single quick stroke of my finger used to on the old synaptic. With the Elantech, I have to keep stroking the touchpad to scroll--too many movements!

2) I don't like the hard drive light under my right wrist--I can't tell if the hard drive is being written to or not. I like having the hard drive light visible, and this is not positioned well to make it easily seen, unless I stop typing and remove my hand.

3) A nice size hard drive...and they partitioned it! UGH! Forget that they tell you it's 160gb--it's really 80gb on one partition and 61gb on the other. So their math is off (80+61=141 gbs, not 160). I have used an old HP nc4000 that does read all 160gb on the hard drive, so I can't figure out why the 1000HA misses 19gb on its hard drive, even with the updated bios.

So, for the touchpad, which is less than the old synaptic quality and simplicity, I give this little machine 4 stars, not 5. But so far, I'm delighted that I got this from Amazon before it sold out. Amazon's deal was the most affordable option for this model (with these specs for hard drive and battery life), and I looked everywhere, even at Best Buy. So all in all, this will serve my needs very well and I'm delighted with it.

This is a superbly designed product. Everything is just as I would want it as if I'd specified every little detail.

The keyboard works out very nicely except for the arguably ill positioned RH shift key, which is a minor beef. It has 12 Function keys plus 4 extra user programmable hot keys.

I have a full sized Compaq laptop and wondered if I could get used to this smaller unit, and now it's by far my favorite.

The video system works well and can support resolutions up to 1920x1080 in case you connect a large external monitor. It has several power/performance profiles - "Super Hybrid Engine" - that you can readily select from the keyboard if desired to optimize performance. Very cool.

I ran Passmark "Performance Test" on the unit and got a bottom line figure of 228. My full size 2006 single core Compaq laptop does 248, so this is in the same ballpark. This wouldn't work for gaming so well, but for QuickBooks Pro, Photoshop, and a couple of other large programs, it's fine.

The built-in webcam and microphones work great with Skype.

It comes with a carrying bag.

The hard drive has two equal size Windows NTFS partitions: one is for the XP system and the other is empty. This works out so perfectly as I deleted the empty NTFS partition and installed SuSE 11.1 Linux so as to have a dual booting machine. SuSE 11.1 supports all the hardware including the webcam, wireless, and the SD memory slot. It was a straightforward install, and I'm tickled with how well this worked out.

At this time, the ASUS 1000HA appears to be the best value by far in its league.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

I got this unit a few days ago, and on the first day there was a stripe in the pixels in the screen. Then yesterday, I noticed that another area began to show the same "stripes" which I was told has something to do with the "pixeling" on the monitor. Otherwise, I love this thing. I am returning this unit. I'm one of those people who are afflicted with dial-up Internet access where I live, so this thing really comes in handy for downloading large files via WiFi. Files that would take hours, or in some cases (literally) days to download at home take just seconds or minutes at the local Starbucks. Then I just transfer them to my home PC on a flash drive.
I installed a 2 gig DIMM of RAM on it and, really haven't noticed any difference in speed (and yes, I flashed the BIOS...) so you might want to save your money there.
The battery life is amazing. The first charge I wanted to run it all the way down before recharging and it took days to drain the battery!
Overall I couldn't be happier with this product!Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

After much research, I settled on the eee PC1000ha; I also looked at the Lenovo -- no 6 cell battery and only 80 gig, for more money at the time (11/2008)
The MSI Wind was a close second, but was always more expensive.

I purchased two eee PC1000HAs, one for each of my children. ps, they were more excited to receive their stuffed animals than the PC!
Overall, these are nice machines, small size, good specs, decent price.

The BIGGEST issues are:

The key pad buttons are EXTREMELY hard to press!!! For small children, it's next to impossible. For this reason alone, I'd consider buying a different brand.
Being forced to use an external mouse is unacceptable!

If you've read any reviews on the eee PC, you'll already be familiar with the positively ridiculous location of the right shift key.
For a 9 year old just learning to touch type, this is a deal killer. Again, I'd consider another model for this issue alone.

Lastly, the touch pad seems to be overly sensitive. Often times causing incorrect data entry etc.

Were it not for excessive "restocking" fees, I'd return the PCs and pickup a different model. Perhaps the Lenovo now that the prices have fallen.

Other than the above, I think these are good PCs. Good luck!

I bought this computer mainly for travel or just to surf the web while lounging around. I also purchased a 2 Gig memory upgrade on advice from previous posts. I haven't noticed much of an increase in speed although I haven't strained memory much yet. At any rate this PC is plenty fast enough for me.

Getting started was easy. Since my router is password secured, I had to go to the website (on my desktop computer) where I input passwords, look up the encryption code, and enter it for the setup on my Netbook. Bingo--I had an excellent connection immediately. The rest of the setup was just tailoring windows for my taste.

Some folks have reported difficulties with the mouse buttons. Take it from me, there is absolutely no problem--you just have to avoid pressing directly down on the button; it is designed to be operated somewhat from the edge. When you try it, it takes a few seconds to learn the right way and then there are no problems.

I did find the "right field" shift key a bit of a nuisance but you quickly get used to it so that's no big deal either.

The only glitch in the whole process was a delivery mixup with UPS. I did not receive the original computer shipped from Amazon although UPS tracking said I signed for it (which I didn't--the signature showing was actually mispelled!). UPS would not deal with me and I had to go back to Amazon. Amazon customer service was excellent and followed up very well to make sure I received the second unit that they shipped. I hope Amazon gets credit for the lost computer otherwise someone has a free one.

This item is a real gem and I heartily recommend it for anyone who wants an ultra-portable, fun to use laptop.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

I have now had my Asus Eee PS 1000HA netbook for a week. I simply LOVE it! We have five other computers in our house, four desktops and a laptop, and for this week, this has been the only computer I have used. It is SO fun, and SO small, yet so powerful, that I basically have been using it for all my daily needs, plus discovered needs I didn't know I had. I even take it in the bathroom to read the NY Times online while.... well, instead of taking the paper in with me! My point is that it is getting close to becoming that ubiquitous little assistant that pretty much can go everywhere with you, and you just can USE it... no problems, quick start up, very long battery life (I have been getting between 5 and 7 hours with just regular use).

Some specifics: The display is bright .... too bright actually, I had to turn it down! By the way, to save some of you the trouble of finding how to do it (the manual did not mention it), hold the Fn (function) key on the bottom left of the keyboard, while pushing the little display brightness key about the numbers, one is for brighter and one is for darker, very easy).

The keyboard is fine, a bit smaller than a conventional one, but not as small as the other netbooks on the market. And that right shift key placement that everyone has been bitching about is indeed a pain, but I am getting used to it. Not enough of a reason not to buy this gem.

The speed of the processor is great! I am not sure what I would do that would require anything faster. It seems plenty fast, displays videos and sound and multiple windows without a hiccup. I really think the Windows XP that comes with it is perfect. I would worry a bit about Vista, if that is offered in the future.

I have not tried the camcorder or built in mic yet, but great features!

It is very light, and carrying it in a small backback or briefcase or just in its little carrying case is a breeze. Oh, and the AC adapter is also very light, about a third of the weight of my standard laptop. Just basically the weight of the cord, the actual little adapter on it is super light. Also, it is dual voltage, 110 and 220, and it is automatic, so if you travel all you need are the little adapter plugs, not a whole transformer.

In all, this is truly the most FUN computer I have ever had. I researched and researched, looked and tried all the others out there, settled on this, partially based on all the wonderful reviews here on Amazon, and then got it. I am SO happy I did! I would HIGHLY recommend this netbook! ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony

As I already have a regular 14" laptop(which is sometimes a little cumbersome to carry), I was looking for an inexpensive, portable second laptop. After seeing ASUS netbook ad on internet, I bought an ASUS 900 with 16 GB SSD but had to return it as the performance just sucked. I then upgraded to ASUS 1000HA and after one month of extensive use I'm very satisfied with its performance.

The Good
- Intel Atom 270 is just great for everyday computing needs. I've installed MS office and it works just fine. There is no perceived slowness.
- The 160 GB HDD makes sure you will not run out of memory for most of your everyday computing needs.
- 1 GB memory. Having windows XP home with 1 GB is a great value. Even with 7 to 8 browsers open along with a few spread sheets and documents, I still have 400 MB to spare. A great relief when you look at the price and size of the laptop.
- Weight 3 lb. I sometimes need to move around with my bag and laptop. With my regular 7 lb laptop, I need to close it and reopen as its too heavy to hold in one hand when open. With EEE, I can keep it open while I move around.
- Battery Life. It has a 6 cell battery, just like regular laptops and as its smaller, I get about 45 minutes of additional running time(3.5 hrs).

The Not so Good
- The keyboard. Its a little cramped, given the size of notebook. Though the keys are regular sized, I'm still to learn how to use shift key. I normally use the right shift. In ASUS, its much smaller. I keep hitting the up arrow instead, which is frustrating at times. For using End or Home keys I have to press Fn key as these are shared with arrow keys.
- The resolution. 1024 X 600 is fine but given the size of the screen, a higher option would have allowed more viewing area. I've started using Google Chrome browser on this laptop as it gives more viewing area than IE or Firefox.
- Speaker quality is not much good, though it has Dolby sound room.
- I'm unable to charge my iPod through its USB ports.
- My palms are sweaty and the laptop is glossy. I need to keep wiping off my finger prints.

Overall a great laptop for the price. I'd recommend it as your back up laptop.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony

Pros:
1. Beautiful, bright screen (as good if not better than my $1,000 Dell laptop.)
2. Small size and reasonable weight (not incredibly light, but very manageable at ~3 pounds).
3. Much faster than I was expecting. Zips through most applications.
4. Easy to upgrade.

Cons:
Right shift key, something I will get used to very quickly.

This is truly a break-through product. Finally someone has gone back to the basics on what a laptop is supposed to do (meet your needs when AWAY from your desk and be PORTABLE). I was tired of carrying around laptops that are getting bigger by the day. Although it is great having a 16 inch screen when you travel, it is much more convenient having a laptop that is only an afterthought when packing AND does not get crushed when the guy in front of you in coach reclines his seat. This unit is packed with features for very little money. As soon as I got this, I popped in a 2GB memory module and loaded it up with Office 2003 Professional, and a slew of productivity applications. This little guy runs them with no problems!

I considered the Aspire One before buying this unit. There are three reasons that drove me to the Asus. First, I saw several complaints regarding the wireless on the Aspire (who wants a mini laptop with bad wireless). Second, the Aspire is VERY difficult to upgrade (apparently you have to disassemble the whole thing to get it up to 1.5GB in memory). Third, the build quality on the Asus unit is top notch versus questionable hinge performance on the Aspire.

1000 vs 1000 HA vs 1000 H. The 160GB hard drive was a no brainer for me vs the SSD on the 1000 due to capacity. I chose the HA saving ~$50 because I rarely use bluetooth and g wireless is plenty fast for my needs. If bluetooth on a laptop are critical to you or N wireless is a must have, then choose the H.

The (in)famous right shift key is bit frustrating, but you will quickly get used to it and have your fingers work around the issue. If you are looking for a portable laptop that meets your needs when you are away from home or office, this is the one.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

Every time I purchase a computer I have anxiety about it working properly. There are so many things that can go wrong before you even get started. So far I can sum up the 1000HA with "it works". Once out of the box I installed a 2GB ram module which was easy to do and it recognized the unit right away. From there setting up XP was easy and it connected to my wireless hub the first time and every time since without any problems. It boots up fast, the screen resolution is good enough for most things. I downloaded Firefox to use as a browser.

Pros: No Bloatware! No trail AOL, Norton, or other annoying services. XP is easy to use, iTunes works fine and so far no conflicts. Also no unecessary manufacturer software add-ons like HP and Dell includes.

Cons: The hover autoselect function on the touchpad was a pain as it selected anything you hovered your arrow over too long. I turned off this feature by disabling the tap feature. I will buy a slim drive DVD to install anti-virus and other programs. You can download them online but I found them more expensive than buying the disc. I will need it to load music cd's on it.

I just got this EEE PC as a Christmas present. I've been doing a lot of research for about the past 3 months on these and this is the one that I settled on. I really wanted the 10" screen and thats one reason I chose this over the Acer Aspire One. Another reason that I like this better is because it is incredibly easy to upgrade, unlike the Aspire One, which is nearly impossible and it voids the warranty on the Acer. Some people on here talk about how it is about a half pound or so heavier than almost all other netbooks. That is not an issue for me because it just makes it feel like its a lot sturdier. The mouse buttons are not hard for me to press like some other people have problems with. I think it might be because of the way they are using them. I think that the way they were designed was to be pressed on the sloped part of the button and not directly from the top. I actually find it easier to press on the sloped part with my thumbs. The keyboard is very easy to use. I'm typing this review on it with very little trouble. The battery life is just as everyone says, about 5 hours or so. It runs surprisingly fast and boots up in about 30-45 seconds and thats running AVG (Free) antivirus software. One reason that it boots so quickly is because it doesn't come preloaded with a bunch of useless software. I transferred about 10GB of music and 2GB of photos and another 4GB of video and I still have a ton of room on the hard drive. The EEE PC runs video, music, virus scans, office, and iTunes with ease. I can't wait to get a 2GB memory upgrade for this. Another thing that I really liked was the look of it. I got the black one and I really think it looks sleek and stylish. When I saw the pictures on the internet I wasn't very impressed but now that I see it in person I'm very satisfied with the way it looks. I would definitely recommend this for someone that is going to college, like myself. It is very portable and extremely functional. And it looks good tooGet more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

Very nice little laptop. Works as advertised, and is quite fast. Battery lasts a long time between charges. looks good and handles well. Purchased it for occasional use when traveling. Will suit that purpose OK. If I needed a laptop for everyday lengthy use, this would be too small, but this is great for my vacations.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

Got this for my husband and he absolutely loves it. Some reviews had suggested that the keyboard was a little small, but it really isn't noticeable and typing even larger amounts of text is not a problem. Initially he'd considered the machine with the flash memory for quieter operation, but is much happier with this given the extra space, the fact that the machine really is quiet anyway, and the apparent limitations of rewriting to flash memory over and over. The only potential downfall is battery life, the quote of 7.2 hours seems optimistic given that this could only be attained with the wireless functionality turned off. Something being marketed as a "net"book is most likely going to be using the wireless most of the time. That said, the few places that you're less likely to have access to a power terminal (i.e. aeroplanes, car journeys etc) probably won't have easy net access either, and the battery life with the wireless turned on seems pretty reasonable and on par with similar models, so still a five star review.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

This is a great alternative to the more expensive notebook for a teen who still needs to learn some responsibility. He still get what he needs for school and for play without using Mom's computer all the time. It should still be working by the time he goes to college in a year...we hope.Get more detail about ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Fine Ebony.

This is an excellent example of what a netbook should be. It has amazing screen clarity. The wireless works well. It was easy to set up and use. I was able to completely clone all of the applications that I normally run on my desktop PC (including Ubuntu 8.10 in dual boot mode). The only possible drawback is having to purchase an external DVD drive to install Microsoft Office applications from CD-ROM. Once installed every application works well. Batterry life and screen brightness are amazing. No matter what I do, the netbook runs for at least five hours and usually longer. Great for cross-country flights. Highly recommended! This laptop is perfect for me as a student. My old laptop would constantly need power outlets and I wouldn't be able to carry 2 books along with it because of the weight and size. The Asus eee is small and fast, but not too small. I also installed a touch screen (cost me about $120 off ebay, took about an hour to install carefully), and it is 10 times better!

This replaced my dead Dell Inspiron 8200, P4 2Ghz single core which weighed over 11 lbs. What a difference! Easy to carry around and use.

Pros: High quality build, bright screen 10", strong wireless, fast and large 160Gb 5400rpm hard disk, 1Gb memory is plenty for Internet and regular Apps, runs Office 2003 great, can run PowerDVD and play dvd files without DVD drive, 3 USB 2.0 ports, easy to use touch-pad and the right/left clicks, SD memory card reader, loud speakers, Skype plus nice 1.3Mp webcam and easy to change out memory and hard disk for service or upgrades.

Cons: Keyboard right-shift key too small and I always hit the up arrow key next to it, 6 cell battery not as strong but I'm running wireless 100% of the time. Glad I didn't get the 3 cell battery.

Overall, better netbook than the Acer Aspire One in upgradeability on memory, hard disk, bigger screen. Cheaper and more features than Lenovo S10, HP, Dell netbooks. Get a real hardisk over 120Gb than buying one with the smallish 4Gb,8Gb,16Gb solid state drives. That way you can save and watch movie and Mp3 files on your netbook, I do. Also, if you don't have an external cd/dvd drive than create ISO files of your cds and load them up with virtual clonecd drive software, its a freeware. Works great after owning my Asus EeePC 1000HA for the last 3 weeks. Has one year warranty also. I received an ASUS 1000HA as a gift. It's incredibly portable, very light and has all the features of a full-sized laptop. This notebook gets five stars, especially now that I was able to fix the only feature that I found bothersome. Touch typists will really appreciate that the keyboard size is only 5% smaller than a regular laptop. However, as mentioned in many other reviews, the right shift key is in an incredibly awkward the position. It's on the far right of the Up key which means your cursor will fly up several rows when you try to capitalize a letter. ASUS customer support told me that while they themselves don't offer a fix for this, they suggested I check out "Sharpkeys", a downloadable program that allows you to change the function of any key on the keyboard by changing the registry file. [....]
I downloaded Sharpkeys from PCWorld's website. When I tried to run the program I got a popup saying that .net Framework was not found and that it needed to be installed before running Sharpkeys. After downloading .net Framework from Microsoft, the Sharpkeys program loaded and less than a minute later the UP key and Right Shift key on my keyboard had swapped positions. Sharpkeys is scary it's so easy. Beware, you might even be tempted to "fix" other keys too.
